Time for some light reading

Last week, Dr. Carol and I escaped for a couple of days with our girls. The trip did not just include our family though. Carol's Mom, her siblings, their spouses, and the other 5 granddaughters joined us on the trip. We had an amazing time together as a family, relaxing as much as we could during our downtime.

Upon returning to the office this week, our patients asked what we did on our vacation. My response was simple... We woke up, applied sunscreen, ate breakfast, walked back and forth from the pool to the beach, ate lunch, reapplied sunscreen, walked back and forth, ate dinner, and then went to bed. Then we woke up and did it again the next day.

During the time on the flight, and the time spent sitting by the pool or the beach, I spent the majority of my time relaxing with a book in my hand. I made sure to read a little fiction, but I wanted to finish the book that I started before the trip.

The book that I was reading was Be Useful by Arnold Schwarzenegger. The book contains 7 rules that he has found useful in finding success throughout his life. Each chapter of the book focuses on one of the 7 rules. The book not only looked at those rules, but also told stories from Arnold's life, in bodybuilding, in Hollywood, and government. To be honest, I didn't really enjoy the book very much, but I do think that the rules apply to just about anyone, anywhere.

Here are Arnold's 7 Rules

1 - Have A Clear Vision
We need to know where we want to go if we want to have any chance of getting there!

2 - Never Think Small
If your goal is too small, it will never inspire you to reach for greatness.

3 - Work Your A$$ Off
There is no substitute for hard work.

4 - Sell, Sell, Sell
We must always be working to convince other people that the ideas that we have are valuable.

5 - Shift Gears
In all of our lives, there are problems that need to be solved. Sometimes we need to step back and shift our thinking to move forward in finding solutions.

6 - Shut Your Mouth, Open Your Mind
Be curious about the people around you. Learn from them. Rather than always trying to be the teacher, step back and learn to be the student.

7 - Break Your Mirrors
Instead of focusing on yourself all the time, success in life comes when you focus your attention on others rather than on yourself.

There you have it folks. 7 simple rules that The Terminator believes can have a massive impact on the quality of your life, and the lives of the people around you!

What do you think of Arnold's rules?

Would they apply to your life?
