Would You Recognize It If Someone Was Drowning?

For years Hollywood has been doing the American public a disservice. Take a moment to picture someone drowning. What do you see? Is the person quiet or loud? Do you see any splashing?  In the movies, drowning victims are often shown to be screaming, with their arms flailing, but according to Frank Pia, PhD this is not at all what happens when someone drowns. Dr. Pia has worked as a lifeguard for years, and has witnessed (and saved) many potential drowning victims. He described the Instinctive Drowning Response, by saying that drowning victims often do not show visible signs of distress, because they are often incapable of making any gestures or calling for help.

As we approach the pool season, it is important for EVERYONE to be aware of the signs of drowning that we have to watch for. As a father of three little girls, it is very important for me to be aware of these signs, and even more important that I share this information with all of you. Please take a moment to watch the video below to learn a little more about what to look for. This information may save someone’s life!
