Where Does It End

How do you know what you can or can’t do if you never try! This week I have had 3 patients ask me what they can do, and/or tell me what they can’t do. All 3 patients were at different ages, different physical capabilities, and different points in their recovery from their injuries. One woman told me that she was not capable of getting down on the floor to do her exercises, one man asked me if he could go back to his normal routine at the gym, and one woman asked me if she could go back to yoga. My answer to all three was pretty much the same. I asked each one of them if they thought they could do what they were asking about! A long time ago, Henry Ford said: “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t – you’re right.” And Mr. Ford was 100% right! Never stop pushing the boundaries, because if you do the walls will close in on your quickly!

A couple of days ago, I came home from the gym, and my Dad was sitting at the kitchen table with (2 of) my girls. He looked up and saw how sweaty I was, and he asked me why I “put myself through that.” I am pretty sure that he was just joking, but I simply responded by pointing at my daughters (probably because I was still out of breath!) I always want to be able to keep up with them, and I want to be around for a long time to watch them, and their children, grow up. More importantly, my daughters know that I am prioritizing my health, and they will, hopefully, follow the example that Dr. Carol and I set for them. I want them to always be challenging the edges of what they are capable of!

We have a tendency to allow one setback during our lives to impact what we believe that we can do for the rest of it! Do not allow yourself to be limited by your past. The only way to know what you are physically capable of accomplishing is to push at the edges of your capabilities. And as soon as you stop pushing the limits, those walls will begin to close in around you. Before you even know what happened, your quality of life will be impacted.

Move well,
