What Should We Do When The Research Results Are Not True?

How many of you are well aware of the relationship between saturated fat and heart disease in America?

What would you think that if I told you that there is evidence that that is one of the greatest lies ever told? I saw several different articles this week all discussing the fact that the sugar industry paid off scientists in the 1960’s to shift the blame for the cause of heart disease in America. The blame was shifted from sugar to saturated fat! You read that correctly! It is a LIE! The sugar industry paid a lot of money to get researchers to publish a review of several specific, hand picked studies that demonstrated a reduced correlation between sugar and heart disease, while creating some concerns surrounding saturated fat.

Research is great and can be a very useful tool in decision making in health care, BUT every article needs to be considered carefully. ALWAYS consider who funded the research, because unfortunately data can almost always be manipulated to tell the story that the author wants it to!
