Stop Looking Back, Start Looking Forward

Guess what happened to me yesterday? I was lucky enough to wake up with significant pain in my right hip! Yay!!! Cue the sound of my Grandfather saying "This getting old stuff is for the birds."

In that moment, my immediate thought was what could I possibly have done to deserve this NEW pain. I have NEVER had any pain in my hips. No history of pain or injury, so whatsoever. I mean I woke up with it. I obviously didn't do anything in my sleep that would have brought it on.

The questions raced through my mind... What did I do to bring this on? Am I just getting old? How could I have been so unlucky?

Then it dawned on me. I needed to follow the advice that I give my patients day in and day out. Stop looking backward, and start looking forward. Instead of dwelling on why it happened, I need to focus on how I was going to fix it! I hit the floor with my foam roller, did some Hip 90 90 stretching, some glute bridges, and then some heavy goblet squats. Now this was not a magic recipe to fix the hip. I still felt the pain for the rest of the day, but the frequency and the intensity did gradually improve. Guess what happened this morning... I woke up with NO PAIN! None! It was resolved enough to allow me to do my typical training session, without limitations!

As we approach the end of 2020, I cannot ignore the similarities... We have never had a year like 2020 (and I never want to have another one quite like it), but rather than spending our time looking back and questioning why things happened, maybe we should be spending our energy looking forward at how 2021 is going to be even better!
